These comments come from the first cohort to graduate from ���Ҵ�ý’s new Certificate of Theological Leadership program. The college welcomes a new class this fall. Designed for ministry professionals, laypeople seeking spiritual growth and recent college graduates considering seminary, the program will benefit any believer interested in serious study.

“I’m grateful for the many ways it has challenged me to grow,” says Addie, an executive assistant. “I’ve loved the structured learning — the rhythm of reading great books, learning from faculty who are both brilliant in their fields and genuinely invested in us, and journeying alongside classmates who have become lifelong friends. Studying scripture, Christian leadership, world Christianity, disciple-making movements and spiritual formation has shaped the way I serve and lead for the glory of God in every area of my life.”

Sara, an editor in Christian publishing, thought about attending seminary to offer her authors greater acumen in her work. “This program intrigued me with the opportunity to earn an applicable certificate while testing my interest in pursuing a full seminary degree,” she says. “I was also encouraged by the transferability of the credits and the seminaries willing to receive them. The coursework has been thorough, edifying and applicable in my professional life.”

“���Ҵ�ý has always been where my love for learning and spiritual growth thrived,” says Laura, an administrator in higher education. “This program was a natural continuation of that journey. The faculty have exceeded my needs and expectations, and my classmates have become some of my most cherished connections, providing academic insight and deep spiritual mentorship.”

After majoring in religious studies at ���Ҵ�ý, Shane went to law school and became an attorney. “I enrolled in the certificate program because I’ve had a growing desire to serve God through ministry, whether vocational or not,” he says. “I was looking for further training to empower and sharpen my personal ministry, and it was everything I hoped for. I recommend it to anyone looking to supercharge their personal spiritual growth or ability to serve others.”

Angela, an ordained minister and church planter, described the program as a deeply formative experience. “Engaging with my classmates in our shared pursuit of deeper Bible literacy — gaining a more profound and nuanced understanding of the Old and New Testaments — has been a joy,” she says.

“Whether students pursue the certificate as a terminal degree or apply it to graduate education, the program connects them with churches and leading seminaries throughout the country,” says President Gayle D. Beebe. “We invite everyone to join us in this noble pursuit of growing in knowledge and understanding of God to better lead and teach others.”

The curriculum, rooted in theological principles and foundations, develops spiritual disciplines and practices that enhance a deeper life and love for God. The small cohorts promote a strong, cohesive learning community among students and professors, enabling participants to become more culturally astute and self-aware.

The flexible learning approach makes it convenient for working adults or those living outside of Santa Barbara to earn a certificate in one year (three semesters), helping students balance their studies with their work and family. The hybrid format, blending online sessions with attendance in person, allows people to participate wherever they are.
